The Akashi Kaikyo Bridge is the longest and tallest bridge in the world. Apart from these, the magnificent piece of engineering has other numerous features that qualify it to be a marvel.

With a length of 3,911 metres and a height of 283 metres, the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge holds the title of the longest and tallest suspension Bridge in the world. Furthermore, it is the most expensive suspension bridge with a cost of $4.3 billion.

The Akashi Kaikyo Bridge connects the Kobe and Awaji Island in Japan and has been built to withstand the harsh weather conditions that may come to its way. The bridge can withstand winds of 286 km/h with the aid of tuned mass dampers (TMDs) which balances the bridge against the direction of wind sway. It can also withstand an earthquake of up to the magnitude of 8.5.

It was commissioned about 16 years ago in April, 1998 as a suspension bridge with six lanes of roadway and still continues to be a marvel till today. The longest suspension bridge in the world is also known as Pearl Bridge.
