No more internet access in Syria

There has been a blackout of internet activities in Syria since Tuesday evening (Syrian time) according to US tech firms monitoring Web traffic and the State Department.

State Department tweeted “Syria is currently experiencing an internet blackout as of this afternoon”.
A web monitoring firm Umbrella Security Labs also reported a “significant drop in traffic from Syria” starting around 6:45pm GMT.

“OpenDNS resolvers saw a significant drop in traffic from Syria.” Tuesday shutdown effectively “disconnects Syria from internet communication with the rest of the world,” the company said.

“On closer inspection, it seems Syria has largely disappeared from the internet,” said Umbrella’s Dan Hubbard.

Zimbabwe doesn’t have money to run elections

Cash-strapped Zimbabwe in a move to plug a gap in its finances ahead of elections expected in the second half of the year, gas approached South Africa for a budgetary support of $100 million.

South Africa has approved the request according to Zimbabwe Finance Minister, Tendai Biti on Monday.

Last year, Biti disclosed that Harare had approached regional economic giant South Africa and oil-rich Angola for $150 millon amid a lack of aid from Western donors who have imposed sanctions on Zimbabwe’s President, Mugabe over charges of human rights abuse.

“Pursuant to discussions in September 2012, I’m aware the South African cabinet has made a decision and it’s a positive decision,” Biti told a news conference.

Quotes of the week: Margaret Thatcher

With the passing on of one of the greatest woman in history, we are bringing you some of her most popular and important quotes.

This could be at any time of her life ranging from her time as leader of the opposition Conservatives Party to her time as the Prime Minister of Great Britain and even afterwards.

In politics, if you want something said, ask a man; if you want something done, ask a woman.” (May 20, 1965 during her speech to National Union of Townswomen’s Guilds)

I don’t think there will be a woman Prime Minister in my lifetime.” (March 5, 1973 on a BBC programme when she was still the Education Secretary)

The Russians are bent on world dominance, and they are rapidly acquiring the means to become the most powerful imperial nation the world has seen. The men in the Soviet politburo don’t have to worry about the ebb and flow of public opinion. They put guns before butter, while we put just about everything before guns. They know that they are a super power in only one sense – the military sense. They are a failure in human and economic terms.” (January 19, 1976 during a speech)

This week in history: the most important dates and events

This is the week starting 17th of March and ending 23rd of March. We want to remind you of various events that occurred in the past years during these days. This is a walk into the past where many things had happened, both positive and negative. Here we go;

March 17

On the 17th of March, 1992, nearly 69 percent of white South African voters backed F.W. de Klerk’s reforms—which included the repeal of racially discriminatory laws—and effectively endorsed the dismantling of apartheid.

Apartheid is racial segregation, sanctioned by law, has been practiced in South Africa before 1948.

The policy was extended in 1948 by the incoming government and was given the name apartheid.

The quote 'the children of today are the leaders of tomorrow' can be said to be one of the most misplaced and blatant lies when using Nigeria as a case study. How do we qualify the fact that Olusegun Obasanjo ruled Nigeria at the bid of thirty-nine in 1976 during the military era and came back to rule Nigeria during the civilian era at the age of sixty-two(he ruled for eight years).

Gen. Muhammadu Buhari ruled Nigeria at the bid of forty-one in 1983 during the military era and contested for the last elections at the age of sixty-nine. He is even planning to contest coming presidential elections when he will be seventy three!

General Ibrahim Babangida also became the military president of Nigeria at the age of forty-four in 1985 and tried to contest the presidential election in 2007 at the age of sixty-six.
