In a tragic event, a Chinese lady Ma Ailun, 23, who was a flight attendant for the China Southern Airlines, died after she was electrocuted by her iPhone5 while she was receiving a call. The lady met her death a few weeks before her wedding which was supposed to hold on the 8th of August.
The message
was spread across the Chinese microblogging site Sina Weibo as her sister
warned people of receiving calls on phones while it’s still connected to the
charger. “(I) hope that Apple can give us an explanation. I also hope that all
of you will refrain from using your mobile devices while charging.” She posted.
The police
had started investigation on the matter and it has been confirmed that she
truly died of electrocution. The iPhone and its accessories have been handed to
the police. It was confirmed by the family that she purchased the smartphone
from an Apple Store last December and used an authorized Apple charger on the
day of this event.
Most
chargers of mobile phones operate on about 5V output and less than 1A in most
cases. Normally, this level of voltage and current doesn’t pose a risk to a
human’s life but there are incidences where there could be faults in the wiring
of a house. This could run a potential of about 115V along the device which is
dangerous to humans if they’re holding the device at that particular time as
experts say that voltage above 36V is able to give an electric shock to a human.

Although it
has not been ascertained that that is the cause of this particular incident,
the police is still investigating the matter. Apple Inc. whose phone is
involved in the matter has stated that it will thoroughly investigate the
matter to know the cause of the incident.
“We are
deeply saddened to learn of this tragic incident and offer our condolences to
the family. We will fully investigate and co-operate with authorities in this
matter.” an Apple spokesman said.
A few days
ago, there was also a report of an iPhone 4 that exploded in a Chongqing man’s
bedroom, burning his mattress and pillow.
I think we
need to be cautious about this when operating our devices because faults don’t
give notice of its arrival. Thanks in advance for doing that, your life is
precious.
