Nigerian mega
telecoms operator Globacom has inaugurated its 20,000 square feet Internet Data
Centre in Lagos that will serve the function of providing co-location, disaster
recovery and hosting dedicated services to clients in Nigeria. It is expected
that not less than 20,000 litres of diesel with generators are available at any
period of time. The data centre is also backed up in other locations which mean
the data is reasonably safe.
And Glo is
not stopping its efforts there as it wants to build “Nigeria’s largest Iconic
Data Centre” in the FCT, Abuja. It says the new data centre will be able to
provide Tier 3 and Tier 4 enterprise data services. It will also provide
network based services, applications, equipment and cloud services in a highly
safe and secure environment.
Cesar
Camara, Globacom Corporate Chief Information Officer (Information Systems)
claimed most websites of entities and organizations in Nigeria are hosted
market like the UK and the USA due to the hostile business environment in
Nigeria like unreliable power supply.
“This is why
Globacom is stepping in to become one of the top players in the Managed
Services Industry across Nigeria and West Africa. We do this by leveraging our
existing telecoms infrastructure, Glo1 Submarine cable, reliable power supply
network, experienced manpower and experience in building state-of-the-art
technologies for our existing voice and data telephony services,” he told
journalists at the Data Centre in Lagos.
“This make
our high capacity data centres highly sought after by all categories of businesses
including SMEs, Financial Institutions, Oil and Gas, Educationists, Hospitals
to telecom service provider,” he continued.
He added
that Glo’s data centre has 99.99% uptime for all servers and systems because
they are housed in safe, fireproof, and secure environment built to
international standards with a 24-hour power supply, internet connectivity with
data backup capacity and redundancy for all equipment.
Globacom
with this step aims to increase its number of corporate clients in the country.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Culture and Tourism, Edem Duke has lauded Globacom
as the only Nigerian company that had identified with the aspiration of the
ministry in the area of youth engagement and empowerment.
Globacom is
the largest telecoms company in Nigeria after MTN with a customer base of about
23 million. It is located in some West African countries as well.
