It seems
Windows Phone may not be destined to die as recent events may have tempted us
to think. The resurrection it seems is coming right from Europe.
Windows Phone
accounted for 9.2% of smartphone sales in the five major markets in Europe
according to consumer research firm Kantar Worldpanel.
The five
major markets are: Great Britain, Germany, France, Italy and Spain. Windows
Phone reached double digits in Great Britain with a share of 12% and in France
with 10.8%.
“Windows
Phone latest wave of growth is being driven by Nokia’s expansion into the low
and mid-range market with the Lumia 520 and 620 handsets,” Dominic Sunnebo,
strategic insight director at Kantar said.
“These models
are hitting the sweet spot with 16- to 24-year olds and 35- to 49-year olds,
two key groups that look for a balance of price and functionality in their
smartphone.” he said.
According to
the reports, Windows Phone is closing in on iOS in some countries in Europe.
For instance, it is just 1% behind iOS in Germany.
Despite all
these, Android still remains the operating system to beat with a total market
share of 70.1% in Europe.
It must be
noted that Microsoft still has a lot of catching up to do in other continents.
In the U. S., it accounted for only 3% of smartphone sales in the last three
month ending in August. Likewise in China it further declined by 2.16% to 2.1%
of the smartphone sales. In Australia, it increased by 2.8% to 6.5% of
smartphone sales.
Microsoft
recently purchased the mobile unit of Nokia, the biggest maker of Windows Phone
smartphones.
This might be something to keep track of because with the purchase of nokia and the contribution from the mind of the world's richest they have a good chance to increase there sales globally
