An initiative to increase the portability of learning materials and reduce the cost of educational materials by the State of Osun, opon imo, was launched yesterday at Ilesha, with dignitaries like the speaker of the Federal House of Representatives Hon. Aminu Tambuwal, Action Congress of Nigeria leader Senator Ahmed Bola Tinubu, and others present at the occasion. Here are some facts you need to know about the newly initiated tablet of knowledge:

The
idea was conceived by the State of Osun in 2011 few months after Ogbeni came
into the government.

The
project was executed under the administration of governor of the State of Osun,
Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola.

The
project was launched yesterday 3rd of June, 2013.

The
device will be presented to secondary school students.

Opon
imo runs on Android 4.0 OS. It has 512MB of RAM and an internal storage
capacity of 32GB. The opon imo weigh a light 1.1kg compared to the weight of
books.

A
Chinese company (unnamed) assisted in the production of the tablet

150,000
units of the device will be distributed to the students.

Each
unit of the device contains over 50 textbooks that span 17 core subjects and 7
extracurricular subjects for SS1, 2, and 3, a set of tutorial questions, past
questions, and educational games to prepare students for school-leaving
examinations like WAEC, NECO, and UTME.

In
addition, it has a virtual classroom with 51 video tutorials. It contains about
823 chapters in total with about 15 hours of audio voiceovers and an average of
16 chapters per course.

It
also has the integrated test zone which makes available Mock Exam tests for 14
core subjects in WASSCE comprising of 10 years of past questions with an
average of 500 questions each and approximately 1800 images.

There
are practice tests for 46 courses with approximately 1220 chapters which
contain about 29,000 questions referencing about 825 images

This
initiative will save about 8.4bn naira annually in textbook procurement costs
for the State of Osun.
