According to
analysis company comScore, Yahoo overtook Google in web traffic in the United
States for the first time the May, 2011. The report claimed Yahoo had 196.6
million visitors in July compared to Google’s 192.3 million.

Yahoo’s new
CEO Marissa Mayer had hinted last month that traffic was growing on Yahoo
sites. Google’s numbers account for every site owned by Google including
Youtube. It must also be noted that Yahoo’s new acquisition Tumblr, was not
included in the Yahoo traffic stats.
Tumblr had
38.4 million visitors over the month of July in the U.S. No doubt this would
have boosted Yahoo’s traffic if it was included.
Microsoft’s
sites came third with 179.6 million visitors while Facebook came fourth with 142.3
million visitors and AOL came fifth with 117.4 million visitors.
This figure
is as a result of changes that have been made to the array of sites in Yahoo’s
folder and most important change is a daily change of Yahoo’s logo before the unveiling of a new logo in September. This boost in
traffic figures has brought insinuations that Marissa Mayer has gotten to a
good start at Yahoo.
The problem
for Yahoo however is how to monetize the traffic it has. It was reported that
revenues from display advertising fell 11 percent in the second quarter of 2013
to $423 million.
Marissa had
said during the firm’s second quarter earnings call: “Hire and retain a great
team; build inspiring products that will attract users and increased traffic;
that traffic will increase advertiser interest and ultimately translate to
revenue.
“People, then
products, then traffic, then revenue.” she said.
It is too early to declare dominance of Yahoo though, as the statistics didn't include visitors from mobile devices. Considering that, Yahoo may likely not be the overall winner of the traffic race in July.

Social networking
site LinkedIn came in at number 20 with 52.9 million visitors in the month of
July. Twitter came in at number 30 with 36.5 million visitors while Pinterest
was number 49 with 25.4 million visitors.
