MTN Group has
reached a milestone of 200 million users across the countries in which it
operates and has decided to invest heavily in education of countries in which
it has reached this milestone which are countries in Africa and the Middle
East.
MTN started
in South Africa and, today with a year before its 20th anniversary in
operation, it has garnered 200 million users. South Sudan is the latest country
to be touched by the arms of the giant telecommunications company.
MTN has
therefore decided to spend R200 million (about 3.1 billion naira) for the benefits of the countries in
which it is located according to MTN Group President and CEO Sifiso Dabengwa.
“Due to the
lack of access to quality education and infrastructure, and low literacy rates in
most of these countries, MTN has chosen to direct a significant amount of its
corporate social (CSI) spends towards education over the next two years.
“This will
provide people with the skills, knowledge and confidence they need to make
positive decisions about their lives,” he said.
MTN has also
unveiled an enhanced version of its Virtual Top Up (VTU) MTN VTU Plus in its
biggest market, Nigeria. This will allow customers to buy airtime, purchase MTN
data services, renew Blackberry subscriptions and a host of other services.
It must be
noted that there are about 40 million MTN subscribers in Nigeria which accounts
for about 20% of the total number of users.
