A survey by Pew Research Centre and the Berkman Centre for Internet and Society at Harvard University has revealed that online teenagers are now bypassing Facebook to go to Twitter.

It is estimated that one out of four online teenagers (25%) uses Twitter compared to 16% of online teenagers in 2011. The percentage of online adults that use twitter is 16%.

The new trend the survey reveals is as a result of trying to avoid parents and other adults on Facebook and also to avoid rampant oversharing.

This is not to indicate that teens are no more using Facebook as it was indicated that 94% of online teens claims to have a Facebook profile and 81% revealed that they use it more than other social platforms. Seven percent of online teens say they use Twitter most, while 3% uses Instagram most and 1% said Tumblr.

It is reported that teens post more personal data on social media platforms than a few years back. The added privacy which cannot be guaranteed on Facebook is one of the reasons some teens use Twitter. The study surveyed 802 teens between the ages of 12 and 17.

One argument that is valid though, is that most teens use both Twitter and Facebook, the number of Twitter users has just increased. Another valid point is that they may be used to complement each other. Time spent on each social platform must also be taken into account.
