The latest Android operating system, Android Jelly Bean (4.1 and 4.2) has surpassed its predecessor Android 3.2 Ginger Bread to become the most popular version of the operating system used by consumers.

Jelly Bean now accounts for 37.9% of users of Android operating system while Ginger Bread comes close at 34.1%. The least used are 1.6 Donut and 3.2 Honeycomb which both have a share of 0.1% of the spoil.

This is the first time that Jelly Bean will be the most used Android OS. Last month, Jelly Bean had 33% share of Android users while Ginger Bread topped at 36.5% and Ice Cream Sandwich came third with 25.6%.

Jelly Bean gained the second position in May when it dispossessed Ice Cream Sandwich with 28.4% of users compared with 27.5 of Ice Cream Sandwich.

Although it must be noted that a major factor; the launch of two new big smartphone which run on Jelly Bean has contributed to the popularity of the OS. Samsung S4 (which has reportedly sold 20 million units) and HTC One were recently launched and this contributed to the rise of Jelly Bean.

It is expected that Google will launch another version of Android, Key Lime Pie, in October to mark the fifth year anniversary of Android OS.

Android operating system now have more than 50% of share of the smartphone market, beating its closest rival, Apple’s iOS by a long distance. Good for Google and bad for Apple, Android is amassing more smartphone users by the day.
