The test run of Maglev train that can move at a top speed of 500km/h (311mph) has been successfully carried out. The train has been designed by the Central Japan Railway Co (JR Tokai) and consists of 16 carriages, carrying up to 1,000 passengers at a time.

The train is expected to be deployed on the 322km long route between Tokyo and Nagoya by 2027. It is expected that this train will cut the already very fast journey of 90 minutes by the Shinkasen bullet trains to 40 minutes. It is expected that by 2045, the route will be extended from Tokyo to Osaka.

“This is the first step towards commercial operations,” said Yasukazu Endo, director of Yamanashi linear test centre. “Everything is being done to gear up for a full-fledged test.”

This high speed is attainable due to the type of technology the train employs. The train employs magnetic levitation in its operation. This means that the train is suspended in air by very strong magnets. The train is not touching the tracks and any reduction of speed by friction is non-existent.

Since the train is not touching the tracks, it is not affected much by adverse weather conditions like rain or snow. The train has a streamlined nose of 15 meters to allow smooth movement in air at such a great speed and cars that are 24.3 meters long.

A prototype of the train was unveiled last November, with the final version unveiled on the 3rd of June. Tests are underway with the train on an 18km stretch of track at Yamanashi which is expected to be incorporated into the final rail line’s route. Members of the public will be allowed to buy tickets to ride the train on its short shuttle back and forth.

Presently, the fastest commercial speed available is 431km/h by Shanghai Pudong Maglev trains and they often move at half of this speed due to bends in its tracks. Not to make you afraid, but it is reported that Chinese engineers are currently developing a Maglev train that travels in a vacuum tube which would be capable of moving at speeds as high as 1000km/h.
