Facts and Stats: How big is the biggest fish in the World?

The earth as we all know, or to be on the safe side contains 30% of land mass and the remaining 70% is water. It is safe to conclude that humans have explored more from the 30% than from the 70%.
A foray into the most popular animal in the entire water body is not a bad idea; in fact it is a wonderful idea.

The so called creature is the fish. Fish breathe in water with their gills unlike human beings and most land animals that breathe air. Like human beings and every other thing in existence, the fish are also of different sizes. What is the size of the largest fish that has been discovered by man?

The largest species of fish is the whale shark (just like you have the Siberian Tigers and African elephants).

It is called a whale shark because it is as large as some species of whales and also a filter feeder like many whale species.

The average size of an adult whale shark is about 9.7 metres in length and 9 tonnes in weight.

The largest whale shark that was ever found was 12.65 metres long, 7 metres in girth, and weighs approximately 21.5 tonnes. It was caught near Baba Island, in Karachi, Pakistan on 11 November, 1947.
There were also reports of fossil of a fish (Leedsichthys Problematicus) found near Petersbrough (in the U. K.). The specimen was about 22 metres long (as big as a blue whale) and was believed to have existed about 155 million years ago (yeah, that’s a long loong time).

The whale shark is the largest living non-mammalian vertebrate.

The whale shark is found in tropical and warm oceans and lives in the open sea with a life span of about 70 years.

The smallest whale shark found yet is 38 centimetres in length.

Okay, okay, don’t get afraid, the whale shark has been discovered to be gentle to humans mainly due to the fact that it feeds on small food particles. Don’t put your hands in its large mouth though.
