The official name of Nigeria is Federal Republic of Nigeria(F. R. N). Nigeria is a country of about 170 million people located in the Western part of the African continent.

Nigeria is the most populated country in Africa. Also, Nigeria is the country with the highest number of black people. The name Nigeria was formed from the Niger river and area by the wife of Lord Luggard, Flora Shaw.

Nigeria has an area of 923,768sq.km. Land area of 910,768sq.km. while the rest is water. In comparison, Nigeria is a little bit bigger than double of California(in the U. S. A) in land area and smaller than Alaska.

The geographical coordinates of Nigeria are 10 00` North of the Equator on the latitude and 8 00` East of the Greenwich Meridian on the longitude.



Nigeria consists of 36 states and the federal capital territory. Nigeria is splitted almost equally between Christianity and Islamic religion.

The official currency of Nigeria is Naira(₦) and kobo(k). The official language of Nigeria is English language.

The most popular languages apart from English language are pidgin english, hausa, yoruba, and igbo. Others are Edo, Efik, Fulani, Idoma, Ijaw, Kanuri, e.t.c.

Nigeria got her independence from Great Britain on the 1st of October, 1960 and was declared a republic on the 1st of October, 1963.

Since independence, Nigeria has had military rule for 29 years and civilian rule for 23years. The country's land mass extends from the gulf of Guinea in the South to the Sahel(the shore of the Sahara Desert) in the North. Nigeria has a total land boundary of 4047km.

The border countries: Benin(773km), Cameroon(1,690km), Chad(87km), Niger(1,497km). The coastline is 853km long.

The lowest point in Nigeria is the atlantic ocean which is at the sea level while the highest point is Chappal Waddi in Adamawa State which is 2,419m above the sea level. Abuja is the capital city of Nigeria. It became the capital when it replaced the former capital city, Lagos, in December 1991.

Nigeria has inland waterways totaling 8,575 km which consist of Niger and Benue Rivers and smaller rivers and creeks. There are two seasons in Nigeria which are the dry and wet season.

As Nile delta is located in Egypt, Niger delta is located in Nigeria. The Niger delta consist of Bayelsa, Delta, Rivers, Abia, Akwa-Ibom, Cross-River, Edo, Imo, and Ondo States.

Olusegun Obasanjo is the longest serving leader in Nigeria's history. He was the fifth Head of State(military regime) between 13th of February, 1976 and 30th of September, 1979 and the 12th president of Nigeria(democratic era) between 29th of May, 1999 and 29th of May, 2007. The Ogun State indigene ruled Nigeria for about 11 years.
Nigeria is the largest producer of Cassava in the world with estimated production of 45million tonnes in 2009, almost 19% of total world production.

The largest state(population) according to the last census(in 2006) is Kano State but estimates given by Lagos State has shown that Lagos is currently the most populated state in the country with population of over 17million people. The smallest is Abuja with a population of 1,405,201.

Niger state is the largest state in land size with an area of 76,363sq.km. Lagos state is the smallest with an area of 3,345sq.km. In comparison Niger State is about 23 times bigger than Lagos State in land area.

The most densely populated State is Lagos with a population density of 5082 persons per sq.km while Taraba is the least densely populated state with a population density of 42 persons per sq.km. The first 13 largest states in land area are all from the Northern part of the country.

Oyo State is the largest state in the Southern part of the country with a land area of 28,454sq.km. Nigeria has four major airports(which operate international flights) in Lagos, Abuja, Kano, and Port-Harcourt.

Electrical power for industrial and household purposes is supplied by Power Holdings Company of Nigeria(PHCN). It was formerly National Electric Power Authority(NEPA) which was nicknamed "Never Expect Power Always" as a result of epileptic power supply. PHCN operates with a frequency of 50Hz. The power generated currently by PHCN is about 4,300Megawatts.

Oil(petroleum) is the largest source of income for Nigeria. Nigeria is Africa's largest oil producer, contribution 3% to the global production, and is the world's sixth largest oil exporter.

As at 2000, Nigeria's proven reserves were estimated at 20 billion barrels, enough to last 40 years at the current rate of production(2.3million barrels per day).

During the process of oil exploration, vast reserves of natural gas(estimated at 100 billion cubic feet) were discovered.

They are the largest reserves found so far in Africa. In 2000, Nigeria began to export Liquefied Natural Gas(LNG), an increasingly important sector which is expected at some point to surpass oil as the nation's major source of revenue... The second part of the post continues here
