Samsung Mobile
continues to lead the global internet usage on mobile devices according to
August data from StatCounter.
The month of
August has seen Samsung extend its lead over its competitors as its devices
accounted for 25.7 percent of internet usage, with its highest lead yet over
Apple who came in at 23.4 percent of global usage.
Nokia, which was recently acquired by Microsoft, came in at third with 21.7 percent usage in
August. The highest usage was from Apple devices until June when Samsung
overtook Apple. Now, it has extended its lead in the just concluded month.
Apple still
maintains a wide lead in the U.S. though. Apple devices accounted for 52.2
percent of mobile internet usage in the U.S. compared to Samsung who came in at
19 percent and Nokia who could only gather a mere 1.5 percent.
“Over the
past 12 months, Apple has increased its share in the U.S. and U.K. but globally
there is an ongoing battle taking place between it and Samsung,” StatCounter
CEO Aodhan Cullen said in a statement.
He thinks
Nokia’s drop to 1.5 percent in the U.S. is “an underdog opportunity for
Microsoft following the announcement of its proposed partial acquisition of
Nokia.”
There should
be a tighter battle for mobile internet usage in this month and few months to
come as Apple gets set to unveil two smartphones, premium iPhone 5S and
low-budget iPhone 5C today at its California headquarters later today.
“Should the
rumours prove true, it will be fascinating to see if a less expensive iPhone
will help it increase market share against lower cost competitors in global
markets,” Cullen said.
