At the 2013
African Banker Awards ceremony that held in Marrakech, Morocco, Nigeria’s
Guaranty Trust Bank has been named the African Bank of the year. The Banker
Awards ceremony which was organized by African Banker Magazine, IC Events and
BusinessinAfrica Events held on Wednesday, May 29th.
The award
was presented to GT Bank by the President, Middle East and Africa for
MasterCard, Michael Miebach.
Other
awards won by Nigeria was the African Banker of the year award which went to
Access Bank CEO Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede, while First Bank Nigeria is the best
bank in West Africa (really surprising, isn’t the best bank in Africa supposed
to be the best in West Africa when it’s located there?), and Lamido Sanusi won
the Central Bank Governor of the year.
Commenting
on the ceremony, Omar Ben Yedder, publisher of African Banker, said: “Once
again, it has been a night where some of the exemplary leaders we have on this
continent have been rewarded for groundbreaking work.
“It should
be noted the work is far from finished and banks and policy makers need to
continue to work together to create the instruments to reach out to the real
economy for whom many of the products and services are out of reach.”
Guaranty
Trust Bank became the first financial institution to cross the 100bn naira
Profit before Tax milestone from its operations at both bank and group levels
in 2012. Chief Executive Officer of Guaranty Trust Bank Plc. Mr. Segun Agbaje
attributed the recognition to hard work, discipline and a well-defined
operating strategy.
I think
Guaranty Trust Bank really deserve this award, that should be obvious to anyone
who lives in Nigeria. One of GT Bank’s main services that endeared them to
customers (especially students) is their e-Banking service which is by far the
best in Nigeria. Congrats to Guaranty Trust Bank and all other award winners,
yes, including Lamido Sanusi.
