It has been
reported by Bloomberg that Amazon is trying to develop its own wireless network
which will enable it to serve the users of its products like kindle.

Bloomberg
reports that people in the know claim Amazon reportedly had series of tests at
its Lab126 research facility in Cupertino, California. The tests were performed
using wireless spectrum controlled by satellite company Globalstar Inc.
Globalstar is
seeking legal approval to lease its wireless service to potential users.
Presently,
kindle users are getting internet service on AT & T and Verizon but that
may soon change if Amazon is successful enough in its trials.
Analysts have
said the present costs of a device like kindle has the cost of the cellular
service added to it. They have therefore predicted that the kindle could become
considerably cheaper if the cellular service is being hosted by Amazon itself.
“Given that
Amazon’s becoming a big player in video, they could look into investing into
forms of connectivity,” independent wireless analyst Chetan Sharma told
Bloomberg.
There have
been previous rumours claiming Amazon is thinking about making smartphones but
is reluctant because of the overcrowded market. There are claims these tests
could also be part of plans toward that goal.
Amazon is the
biggest retailer of books online and its kindle device has been geared towards
improved engagement on e-books. The company’s stock price has more than doubled
over the past three years due to stockholders’ faith in the booming company.
Amazon owner,
Jeff Bezos also got into the media arena recently when he purchased the Washington Post for $250 million.
