Android continued its rise in shipments in 2013

Google owned android operating system has come to become the most popular operating system in smartphone and that status was further buffered in 2013 with android accounting for almost 80% of smartphone shipments.

Android accounted for 78.6% of smartphone shipments in 2013, up from 69% in 2012 and 49.2% in 2011. This shows a rapid rise in the android ecosystem in few years. Its closest competitor, Apple, was only able to account for 15.2% of smartphone shipments in 2013.

Despite the release of iPhone 5C and 5S, Apple was down from 18.7% it had in 2012. This is probably be due to the fact that android has many smartphone models compared to Apple and also has cheap smartphones in the region of $100 in developing economies.
Microsoft’s Windows Phone also had a small increase to 3.3%, up from 2.4% in 2012. Blackberry continued its downward trend with 1.9% of shipments in 2013, down from 4.5% in the previous year.

This is captured by the image above which was made by Statista.
