Google owned
android operating system has come to become the most popular operating system
in smartphone and that status was further buffered in 2013 with android
accounting for almost 80% of smartphone shipments.
Android accounted
for 78.6% of smartphone shipments in 2013, up from 69% in 2012 and 49.2% in
2011. This shows a rapid rise in the android ecosystem in few years. Its closest
competitor, Apple, was only able to account for 15.2% of smartphone shipments
in 2013.

Despite the
release of iPhone 5C and 5S, Apple was down from 18.7% it had in 2012. This is
probably be due to the fact that android has many smartphone models compared to
Apple and also has cheap smartphones in the region of $100 in developing economies.
Microsoft’s
Windows Phone also had a small increase to 3.3%, up from 2.4% in 2012.
Blackberry continued its downward trend with 1.9% of shipments in 2013, down
from 4.5% in the previous year.
