Google’s
video giant, YouTube has delivered its first ever video awards which took place
in New York with other events in Seoul, London, Moscow and Rio de Janeiro. The
event was streamed live on the video site and some surprises were involved.
The first YouTube Music Award for YouTube Breakthrough was won by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis for their “Thrift Shop” video. Macklemore claimed the video was produced with $5,000 with some friends. This is peanut when you consider the amount spent on videos these days.
Winner of the “Response of the Year” award went to pop violinist Lindsey Stirling & Pentatonix for their cover of Imagine Dragons’ “Radioactive”. She claimed, and rightly that she owes her success to YouTube.
“I owe everything about my success to YouTube. YouTube
let me be true to my passion…true to myself.” Lindsey said.
Taylor Swift song “I Knew You Were Trouble” won the YouTube Phenomenon award for inspiring the most fan videos.
Korean girl group Girls’ Generation won Video of the Year with their “I Got A Boy” video which had over 70 million views.
Eminem was the winner of the “Artist of the Year” award despite his new album not being released until later this week.
One major surprise for me though is that the man with the most viewed video on YouTube, PSY, didn't win any category of the award. It's also surprising that Eminem won the artist of the year.

This is the debut for YouTube and expectations will be high
for the next edition.
