Undoubtedly,
Facebook is now the biggest social media site around and the ultimate place to
meet people you care about online. Apart from interpersonal activities on the
social site, Facebook has also made it possible for people with the same
interests to discuss and receive information about their interests.
The major
ways of doing this are through groups and pages on Facebook. Both improve the
user experience of the mega social site. It must be noted however that there
are differences between the two and how they operate.
Pages according
to Facebook allow real organizations, businesses, celebrities and brands to
communicate broadly with people who like them while groups are for a number of
people (usually small) who have similar interests.
Pages are
liked on Facebook while groups are joined. The first difference is that a page
can be liked by anybody on Facebook while this varies for types of groups. An
open group can be joined by a user or through a member of the group, closed
group on the other hand will require you to ask to join the group or be added
by a member. You’ll have to be added by a member to join a secret group.
There is no
limit to the number of likes that a page can garner on Facebook. Although
Facebook has not indicated the limit to the number of members a group can have
and this is evident in the fact that some groups have millions of members,
however Facebook has indicated that some features of a group will be limited
when it reaches a certain size (no specific feature was mentioned).
Users who
like pages get the pages’ updates in their timeline whenever there is a new
update but no notification is sent to them. A group however will notify its
members whenever there is a new post by any member of the group. A group’s post
can be seen by members only except in open groups.
In different
ways, groups have their advantages. For a company, brand or celebrity looking
to disseminate information to a large chunk of users, a page is the best option,
but a small number of people who will like to follow a particular interest and
connect to other users in a closer way? I think a group is the best bet with
the tight control it has.
