Facebook has revealed
through its Product Manager, News Feed Ranking, Chris Turitzin in a blog post
that users of Facebook will see less of text updates from pages and more text
updates from their friends. It was also revealed that other types of contents
from pages could get more rank in the news feed than before.
“We are
learning that posts from pages behave differently to posts from friends and we
are working to improve our ranking algorithms so that we do a better job of
differentiating between the two types.” he revealed in the blog post.
He further
revealed that experiments by the site engineers revealed that seeing text posts
from friends encouraged users to update their statuses more. He revealed that
there were 9 million more status updates from users daily as a result of this.
“In fact, in
our initial test when we showed more status updates from friends it led to on
average 9 million more status updates written each day.” he said.
He stated
that posts which had links embedded in them got less activity than a link-share
which included a picture and a preview from the post. However, he didn’t state
specifically what pages should post more frequently.
“Many Page
owners often ask what kind of content they should post. This is difficult to
answer, as it depends on who your audience is and what they want to see.” he explained.
