Social
media giant Facebook in a bid to improve user experience has said that it will
allow you to hide a post you don’t like from your timeline. While doing this,
Facebook will ask you why you’re hiding the post to tailor the right posts to
your timeline in the future.
Hiding a
post from a user will reduce their posts on your timeline. However, if any of
your ‘friends’ dislike your post, you would not be notified as there won’t be a
dislike button that people want to see.
“Over the
next few months, what you will see from us is more on why people like and don’t
like certain things in their feed,” Facebook’s Product Manager for Ads, Fidji
Simo told ABC News. “We are planning to refine those so users can tell us
exactly the reasons they are hiding that piece of content.”
It is
expected that this feature will be available to users in the coming months
“If a lot
of people start reporting that something is offensive, it’s something we would
probably not show to a lot more users,” she explained. “If you tell us that
something is uninteresting we would show you less about that, but we wouldn’t
use that signal with other users.”
A similar
step has been in place for people who want to hide ads on Facebook as they’re asked
the reason they want to hide the ad. Facebook CEO has often stood against the
direct dislike button even from third party sites connected to Facebook.
Facebook
introduced the like button in 2009 and users have been asking for the dislike
button to follow but Facebook is not interested in doing that. I think on the
business side of things, it is better if Facebook doesn’t introduce the dislike
button.
We have
heard about how users’ emotions are affected when people like their post and
comment on it. Some people even check regularly to see if anybody had liked
their post or made a comment. Some users of Facebook reduce their sharing when
they don’t get likes or comments on their posts.
Now,
imagine what will happen if Facebook introduce a dislike button. Less people
will share for the fear of getting dislikes for their post. Less sharing
literally means more headaches for Facebook.
Looking at other social media sites, you’ll discover that they don’t
allow you to dislike a post. Twitter, Google plus, LinkedIn, Pinterest to name
a few.
They’re not
keeping it out of their sites for no reason, it is vital for business as social
interactions online affect users’ mood in real life.
Facebook will soon allow you to ‘dislike’ a post
