A
Californian start-up SONTE has designed a window shade that could replace
traditional curtains and blinds. The new window shade could be controlled
through Wi-Fi using an Android or iOS smartphone app.
This new
innovation can find application in glass windows, showers, and mirrors. The film
is transparent where there is electricity supply while it goes opaque when
there is loss of supply.

Apart from
controlling the amount of light entering a place, the film can also control the
amount of heat entering. This could reduce the amount people pay for heating
bills. Another advantage is that it absorbs over 85% of ultraviolet rays that
enter your house and also reflect over 70% of infrared rays.
The film
has also been proven to use very small amount of power as it consumes less than
5 watts per m2 and this is only consumed in its on state (when it is
transparent). The film also has a fast response, about a second and is thin, 0.4
millimeter thick.
The film
can be cut to various sizes depending on where you want to use it. SONTE has
launched a campaign to raise the target of $200,000.
I don’t
know if any of you can remember, but I saw something similar in popular TV
series 24 when some government officials were trying to conspire against Jack
Bauer and CTU.
