Pinterest improves features of article pins

Fast growing social media site Pinterest has decided to bump up the features of articles that are pinned to the site. This was revealed in a blog post on the 24th of September on Pinterest’s official blog by Jon Parise, Software Engineer, Pinterest.

Previously, article pins on the site only showed a selected picture from the web page and the link underneath the picture. Now, that is about to change as article pins will now include the headline, author, story description and link.

Starting today, we’re rolling out a new look for article pins. Articles will now have more information – including the headline, author, story description and link – right on the pin. So, when you find articles about things you’re passionate about, such as science, travel, parenting or health, they’re easier to save and organize on Pinterest.” Jon revealed in the blog post.
Pinterest who claim that more than 5 million articles are pinned everyday will also allow you to pin articles that may be of interest to you to specially created boards to read them later. For instance, you could create boards about tech, politics, and psychology which will allow you to pin interesting articles in those categories to the boards.
Technically, you have your account for the longest time foreseeable which means you could have a sort of online library on Pinterest for your articles. This is a great use of the social site which has increased in popularity over the year.
The feature is currently available for selected sites like The New York Times, The Guardian, Mashable, Wired, Wall Street Journal and others. It will be available for all sites and on mobile very soon.
This is seen as a step in the direction of “promoted pins” which the site wants to experiment in few weeks to come. An email was sent to users (received one in my inbox) about the change and it will be experimenting with pins that are not paid for yet to see how the service will perform with users.
Of course, the promoted pins according to Pinterest will be tailored to interests of individual Pinterest users. Personally, I think Pinterest has its advantages over Facebook and Twitter and users of the social site would attest to this.
Are you on Pinterest? What do you think about this new development by Pinterest?
