A car containing a couple believed to be Chinese was flipped
by an elephant 6:30am this morning in the South African Kruger National Park.
Reports claim that only the man sustained visible injuries. The Park spokesperson William Mabasa claims a helicopter, local doctor, and paramedics were sent to the scene.
“It is not clear yet why the elephant turned aggressive. However,
we would like to appeal to the public to always be on the lookout for these
huge animals and try not to get too close whenever they see one approaching on
the road,” Mabasa said in a statement.
“We have been informed that the man has a few broken ribs
and internal bleeding. Tests on him are not completed. The woman is complaining
of back pains and we are waiting for her X-rays.”
The tourists were taken to the Clinix Phalaborwa private hospital for treatment. The Park’s management is expected to verify the man’s details and contact the Tourism Safety Initiative, and their embassy.
Kruger National Park lies in South Africa’s north east, next to Zimbabwe and Mozambique. It is one of the largest reserves in Africa with an area of 19,633 sq. km (7,580 sq. mi).
